The sicilian defense is a last resort by Black to avoid the dreaded Ruy Lopez. With 1...c5, he keeps White's Pawn out of d4, as well as allowing his Queen a free diagonal. There are two ways for White to continue: One involves an early d4, trading a center Pawn for a wing Pawn, and the other, called the closed sicilian, is when White does not play d4, and instead plays Nc3, g3, and Bg2. Either way, Black usually plays Nc6, g6 and Bg7, playing for the control of d4.

I think this is how you play the sicilian.

It's certainly one way. I don't study openings.

Another way of avoiding regular sicilian defence is 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 or d6 3.Bb5 which gives white atleast a slight plus and he can avoid endless variations also or he can go for Alapin variation with 2.c3
